Heating and cooling in New Mexico
Extreme summer heat with low humidity. Systems are sized for very high outdoor temperatures, dust loads coils and filters, and evaporative coolers still serve many older homes.
New Mexico licenses mechanical contractors through the Construction Industries Division (CID), and the MM-98 classification covers HVAC. CID or local jurisdictions issue permits.
Albuquerque sits around 5,000 feet, with hot, dry summers, cold nights and mild winters. Evaporative coolers remain common, refrigerated air is growing, and altitude affects furnace and AC setup.
Ask any contractor for a CID license number with the right mechanical classification before work begins.
Las Cruces and southern New Mexico are hotter and lower in elevation, while Santa Fe and the north sit above 7,000 feet with cold winters. Altitude affects equipment setup statewide, and wildfire smoke and spring winds make filtration valuable.
