Air quality, ducts & controls
Indoor air quality and humidity control
Whole-home air quality is mostly filtration, humidity and fresh air. The right setup depends on climate: dehumidifiers in humid regions, humidifiers in dry and cold ones, and better filtration where wildfire smoke, pollen or dust is common.

Most systems can handle a MERV 8–13 media filter if the filter cabinet and ducts allow enough airflow. Jumping to a thick high-MERV filter in a slot sized for a 1-inch filter can choke airflow and freeze the coil.
Indoor humidity between about 30% and 50% keeps most homes comfortable and limits dust mites and mold. Too low and wood floors gap and skin dries out; too high and windows sweat and closets smell musty.

Signs you need indoor air quality & humidity
- Static shocks and dry skin in winter

- Sticky feel even when the AC is running
What the technician does
- 1
Measure
Humidity, airflow and current filtration are checked first.
- 2
Recommend for your climate
Media filters, humidifiers, dehumidifiers or ventilation based on what the readings show.
- 3
Install
Equipment added to the existing system with drains, water supply and controls as needed.
- 4
Set up
Humidity targets and filter schedule explained.
What affects the cost
Prices are set by the contractor after diagnosis. These are the factors that move the number most:
- Type of equipment
- Changes to the return or filter cabinet
- Water and drain connections
- Ongoing filter or pad costs
Safe to check yourself
- Use a hygrometer to track humidity
- Choose the highest MERV your filter slot and system allow
- Run bathroom and kitchen fans
Leave to a pro
- Ozone-generating 'purifiers', which the EPA warns can irritate lungs
- Forcing a thick filter into a thin slot
Indoor Air Quality & Humidity FAQ
What MERV filter should I use?
MERV 8 to 13 works for most homes if the system has a filter cabinet sized for it. Ask a technician to check static pressure before moving to a higher rating.
What indoor humidity is best?
About 30% to 50% for most homes. In very cold weather, keep it toward the low end to avoid window condensation.
Do whole-house air purifiers help with wildfire smoke?
A well-fitted MERV 13 filter running with the fan on helps significantly. Seal the house and avoid bringing in outdoor air during smoke events.
What is the difference between MERV 8 and MERV 13?
MERV 13 filters capture much finer particles, including a large share of smoke and many bacteria-size particles; MERV 8 mainly captures dust and pollen. Higher MERV filters need a system that can handle the airflow.
Do I need a whole-home humidifier?
In cold, dry climates, a humidifier can keep winter humidity around 30–40%, reducing static, dry skin and gaps in wood floors. It isn't needed in humid regions.
When does a home need a dehumidifier?
If indoor humidity stays above about 50–60% even with the AC running, a whole-home dehumidifier helps prevent mold and musty odors.
What is an ERV or HRV?
An energy recovery ventilator (ERV) or heat recovery ventilator (HRV) brings in fresh air while transferring heat, and with an ERV some moisture, between incoming and outgoing air.
Do UV lights in HVAC systems help?
UV lights aimed at the indoor coil can reduce mold and biofilm growth there. They don't replace filtration or regular maintenance.
